LES AUGUSTINES DE LA MISÉRICORDE DE JÉSUS DE L'HÔPITAL GÉNÉRAL DE QUÉBEC
Augustine Community

Thanks to the initiative taken by Mgr. de Saint-Vallier, the Hôpital Général de Quebec, which was originally intended to offer healthcare to the elderly and the poor, was erected in 1692 following the architectural plans of Jean Maillou.  In 1693, answering Mgr. de Saint-Vallier’s request for aid, four nuns of the Hôtel-Dieu de Québec began to help Monsignor at the hospital.  In 1698, Mgr. Saint-Vallier named these four Augustines de l’Hôtel-Dieu de Québec to the head of the General Hospital’s administration.  They would eventually form a new community, the Augustines de l’Hôpital Général de Québec, who held, and continue to hold today, a great fervour towards Mgr. Jean-Baptiste de la Croix de Chevrières de Saint-Vallier (1653-1727).  Over the years, in addition to performing regular hospital functions, they have specialised in long-term care for the elderly. Their mission consists of voluntarily working with the elderly and the poor, as well as conserving and promoting their heritage.

The hospital, located in the buildings that once housed the Récollets on the banks of the Saint-Charles River, contains a rich collection of works of art.  Several relics that date back to the early colonies are also conserved there.  Surrounding the hospital is a cemetery where many representatives of the French and English nobility are buried, as well as 500 military personnel, including General Montcalm, who were killed during the Battle on the Plains of Abraham.

Three institutions are associated with the Augustines de la Miséricorde de Jésus de l’Hôpital Général de Québec:
- L’Hôpital Général de Québec (monastery)
- L’Église de Notre-Dame des Anges (church)
- Le Musée des Augustines (museum)

ÉGLISE NOTRE-DAME DES ANGES (former Récollet church)

The former Récollet church, constructed in 1671, was acquired by Mgr de St-Vallier in 1692.  In 1721, this church was converted into the Notre-Dame des Anges Church and was placed under the patron of Notre-Dame des Anges and St. Madeleine.

Despite numerous fires that, over the years, ravaged the city of Quebec, this church as well as the monastery belonging to the Augustines de l’Hôpital Général de Québec were saved from destruction.  Though subject to several restorations and extensions throughout the centuries, the church still conserves its richness thanks to its interior décor which includes its wooden ceiling, its retable of the main altar and its collection of paintings, painted on wood by Mother Madeleine Maufils, an Augustine de l’Hôtel-Dieu de Québec, who created her own unique style of reproducing various Québec City landscapes. In 1992, a magnificent stained-glass window was placed in the church.  It accentuates the stela containing the bones of Mgr de St-Vallier, the founder of the hospital.

Points of Interest :

  • Objects from the 17th and 18th centuries
  • Works of Brother Luc and of Mother Madeleine Maufils
