CHALMERS-WESLEY UNITED CHURCH
Église Chalmers-Wesley - Église unie Saint-Pierre

This church, inaugurated in 1853, carries the name of Chalmers in honor of Reverend Thomas Chalmers, a former Scottish pastor and former head of the Free Church movement in Scotland. Chalmers-Wesley Church, erected following the architectural plans of John Wells, is characterized by its neo-Gothic architecture and by its interior décor that is typical of the Protestant religion, a religion that is centered around the reading of the Bible and the sharing of different interpretations of these sacred texts.

It is situated within the walls of Old Québec, close to the Citadelle, and is presently the home of two communities: Chalmers-Wesley United Church (Anglophone) and Église unie Saint-Pierre (Francophone). This new French-speaking assembly was created in 1987, with the intention of serving the French Protestants of the Québec City region.

You will be fascinated by the twisted iron lantern and the portico ceiling. The richly-colored stained glass windows, signed by Fisher, and the beautiful woodwork give this place of worship a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The stained-glass windows and the clock that is found in the church were taken from the old Wesley church.  The organ, which is placed at the front of the church, was constructed and installed in 1890. It was restored by the Casavant House of St. Hyacinthe in 1912 and again by Guilbault-Thérien in 1982.

Organ recitals, which are presented every Sunday at 6:00pm during the summer season, give you the opportunity to hear this masterpiece, backed by the fine acoustics of the building.
