ÉGLISE SAINT-THOMAS-D'AQUIN
St. Thomas Aquinas Church

St. Thomas Aquinas Church was dedicated to this Doctor of the Church, who lived in the 13th century and who was known for his phenomenal ability for analysis and his profound knowledge of religious Tradition.  This neo-Gothic-style church, which was constructed in 1954 and inaugurated in 1955, was designed by architect Philippe Côté and has a rather plain exterior but has an interior décor that is astonishingly innovative.  Its façade is adorned with blocks of granite of which the contrast between light and dark is rather striking.

The interior décor along with the oak furniture was created by renowned sculptor Lauréat Vallière of Saint-Romuald.

The modern interior of the church gives an impression of uniformity, though at the same time portraying two contradictory effects: proximity and vastness. The sculptures, created by Vallière, give richness to the sanctuary. Vallière was influenced by the traditional liturgical education stemming from the Middle Ages that used works of art to introduce the sacraments.  He therefore wanted to introduce the history of the Christian sacraments as well as introduce the saints and the virtuous to the faithful.

A publication entitled «L’église Saint-Thomas-d’Aquin : la grande tradition biblique signée Lauréat Vallière» is available at the church.
