ÉGLISE SAINT-JOSEPH DE LAUZON
Saint-Joseph de Lauzon Church

Considered as the « Mother Parish » of the South Shore, the Pointe-Lévy Parish houses the first church erected in North America south of the St. Lawrence River. This church, constructed in 1675 and dedicated to St. Joseph, was the first stone church to be built on the South Shore.  Unfortunately, it was destroyed by fire on February 14, 1830.  It was reconstructed on the same site between 1830 and 1832.

This place of worship, built following the classical tradition, combines architectural rigour with classical ornamentation.  François Fournier was in charge of the church’s interior décor, which was designed by architect Thomas Baillargé.  When you visit, take the time to admire the liturgical furnishings and the main altar, the latter having been sculpted out of wood by Ferdinand Villeneuve of Saint-Romauld. There is also an ex-voto of St. Anne found in the walls surrounding the side altars.  The church also houses a Way of the Cross that was created by a native of Lauzon, as well as stained-glass windows made by Nincheri.

As you make your way to Saint-Joseph-de-Lauzon Church by way of the road Monseigneur-Bourget, you will come across the most important statue of the crucifixion of Christ found in the City of Lévis. You may also take some time to contemplate the most significant monuments of Lévis’ local heritage, which are found not far from the church and are of the Second Empire style.  These buildings include the Presbytery (1910), the Jésus-Marie Convent (1855), the Saint-Joseph-de-Lauzon school and the community house (1885).

The remains of 15 000 people that were originally buried in the old cemetery of Saint-Joseph-de-Lauzon were transferred in 1875 to the Mont-Marie historical cemetery, which is located under the shade of trees that have stood there for over one hundred years.
