ÉGLISE NOTRE-DAME DE LÉVIS
Notre-Dame de Lévis Church

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire Parish in Lévis was created on July 15, 1850, thanks to the initiative of Mgr. Joseph-David Déziel. That same year Notre-Dame de Lévis Church was built. The church was extended in 1854 under the direction of Antoine Pampalon, and as a result became the second largest church of its time in America. This neo-Classical masterpiece was designed following the plans of architect Thomas Baillairgé.

David Dussault, the Baillargés mason, also collaborated on the construction of this church. It is more than 200 feet long and 70 feet wide, and was built using green stone from Cap-Rouge. This church, which was classified as an historical monument in 2002, is the most important and the best conserved masterpiece of the École d’architecture of Thomas Baillairgé.

Many renowned sculptors, such as André Paquet, Lauréat Vallière and Raphaël Giroux, worked on the interior décor, which was created between 1853 and 1869. The décor includes several sculptures and decorative patterns that were sculpted by Victor Bourgault and David Ouellet. Louise Carrier, an internationally renowned painter from Lévis, designed the mosaics of the baptistery. The pulpit is attributed to Ferdinand Villeneuve, a renowned sculptor who greatly influenced religious sculpture.  His studio still exists and is located in Saint-Romuald.

Among the treasures of the church, there are seventeen stained-glass windows by Vincenzo Poggi which follow the theme of the life of the Virgin Mary. There is also a main altar, a pulpit and paintings that date back to the 16th and 17th centuries.

The Notre-Dame de Lévis Church houses two Mitchell organs that were built in 1869 and restored in 1999. At the time of their construction, these organs were considered the largest ones in the Québec City region. A masterpiece not to be missed!
