Quebec Baptist Church / Alliance chrétienne et missionnaire de Québec

Quebec Baptist Church

The establishment of an English-speaking Protestant Congregation of the Baptist denomination in Québec City dates back to 1845, the year when seventeen Protestants gathered in Québec City to form a Baptist church.  Mr. David Marsh was the first pastor named to the head of this congregation.  The first chapel was situated at the corner of the roads McMahon and d’Auteuil.  In 1918, the Baptist community decided that it would be best to leave this chapel in order to establish themselves on Grande Allée.

There were two things that motivated this move: there was an absence of protestant churches in this area and the majority of the members of the congregation already lived in this area as well.  Therefore, in 1918, the Quebec Baptist Church opened its doors on Grande Allée.

Since its beginnings, this place of worship has mostly served the Anglophone community of Québec City.  The church, inspired by medieval times, was designed by architects Burke, Horwook and White of Toronto.  This gothic style building includes a rustic brick facing, with the brick and pebbles used for the construction coming from Deschambault and Asbestos.

The interior décor, following the 16th century Tudor style, is rather simple as it conformed to the architects’ preoccupations with rationalism, a movement which was very popular in the 1920’s. Based on the structure of Protestant churches of the 13th, 14th and 15th centuries, this church also includes a reception hall that is typically English and that can accommodate up to 200 people.  The furniture is made of massive pieces of oak as well as of black birch.  The Casavant organ found in this church dates back to 1910, and there are also several commemorative stained-glass windows by B. Leonard, two of which were retrieved from the former chapel that was found on rue McMahon.
