Brothers of the Christian Schools of Québec

Br. of the Christian Schools

The Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools was founded by St. John Baptist de la Salle at Rheims (France) in 1680.  Its mission was the instruction and Christian education of children, craftsmen and the poor, all in a spirit of great faith and enthusiasm.

In Québec, they were first introduced in Montreal, where four brothers from France opened a school in 1837. Six years later, in 1843, they settled themselves on la côte des Glacis in Old Québec.  In addition to having created several educational establishments throughout the province, they were also the pioneers for the faculté de Commerce (Faculty of Commerce) in Quebec City and were the founders of many trade schools.  They taught at both primary and high schools, as well as at educational organizations such as the Villa-des-Jeunes, which they themselves created at Saint-Augustin.  Having been especially compassionate and attentive towards children, their charisma has influenced many people and has reunited hundreds of young people through specific projects for the past 300 years.

The Brothers of the Christian Schools place a great importance upon prayer and upon the education of both children and adults be it either through school, extracurricular activities or innovative pedagogical means.  Voluntarily living in community, they took care of the social advancement of children and adults and were volunteers within numerous social and religious organizations in Quebec and abroad.

Spirituality's Library

One can find the main attraction of the Quebec chapter of this congregation in a house situated on rue Cook in Old Quebec.  Not only does this house serve as a home for a small community of brothers, it also houses a library that contains a collection of more than 28 000 specialised works within the field of spirituality.  You may visit this library free of charge.  In addition, this community offers, through a Carrefour jeunesse, a faith-filled life experience of brotherhood for those 18 years of age or older.
